On October 27, 2021, a centuries-old newspaper The Philadelphia Inquirer published a supplement themed with Together For a Shared Future, to mark the 100 days countdown to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The Chinese Consul General in New York Huang Ping wrote an article entitled Meet In Beijing for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

In retrospect of the special connection of China and the US in Winter Olympics history, Huang Ping stated that, in 100 days, the 24th Winter Olympics is set to be held in Beijing. Beijing will make history as the first city to host both the summer and the winter Olympic Games, the first ‘Dual Olympic City’ in the world. At present, all preparations have entered the ‘home stretch’. Under the guidance of the new Olympic motto, “Faster, Higher, Stronger - Together”, China will stay committed to the concept of hosting ‘green, inclusive, open and clean’ games, make every effort in preparation to present a streamlined, safe, and splendid Winter Olympics Games to the world.

Huang Ping said, the Winter Olympics offers a stage for athletes to showcase their style and skills. We sincerely invite athletes from the US and around the world to get together in Beijing. The Olympic Charter clearly calls for maintaining and promoting the independence and political neutrality of the Olympic Games. Politicizing sports goes against the spirit of the Olympic Charter, and hurts the interests of athletes from every country. We should oppose the wrong words and deeds of boycotting the Beijing Winter Olympics for political purposes.

Huang Ping pointed out, the Olympics is a good opportunity for countries to foster understanding and friendship. People-to-people exchange through sports and culture has always been the engine and lubricant in the relationship between countries. The Ping-Pong Diplomacy opened the door to friendship between the Chinese and American people 50 years ago. Shortly afterwards, the Philadelphia Orchestra’s visit to China also helped to accelerate the warming-up of the China-US ties. Both have become a much-told tale in the history of relations between the two countries. The China-US relations now stands at a new crossroads. On the basis of respecting each other’s core concerns and properly managing differences, both sides have to strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, enhance pragmatic cooperation and the coordination of international affairs, so as to add more positive factors to the bilateral relations.

Huang Ping stated that the US has always been at the forefront of winter sports;the northeastern US, in particular, has long enjoyed a rich winter culture and atmosphere. Beijing’s successful bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics, in particular, has inspired more Chinese people to develop enthusiasm for and to engage in winter sports. The Chinese Consulate General in New York is committed to working with all sectors in the consular district, to take the Beijing Winter Olympics as an opportunity to promote cooperation between China and all states in the consular district in various fields, such as sports, culture, education and trade, to better benefit the people from both countries.

Huang Ping pointed out, right now, the COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to rage around the world and the global economy is on a difficult and winding path to recovery. The theme of the Beijing Winter Olympics is “Together for a Shared Future”. The Beijing Winter Olympics will not only enhance the understanding and friendship among countries, but it will also boost confidence and hope for mankind to work together in the face of challenges. In 100 days, let’s meet in Beijing for the Olympic Games!

The supplement primarily uses blue and white, which symbolizes ice and snow. With the official motto “Together for a Shared Future” as the headline, the supplement outlines the splendid and wonderful Beijing Olympics. It also tells the story of Chinese and the US winter sports athletes, as well as the cultural and sports cooperation between China and Pennsylvania. With the beautiful design and rich content, the supplement received warm responses and praise.

On the same day, the Op-Ed page of The Philadelphia Inquirer also published the comment by the Deputy Consul General and Spokesperson Qian Jin of the Chinese Consulate General in New York. Qian introduced that all preparations have entered the “home stretch”. China will make every effort to present a streamlined, safe and splendid Olympics Games. Welcome the U.S. Athletes to get together in Beijing to pursue their dreams. We oppose boycotting the Beijing Winter Olympics for political purposes. The Chinese Consulate is ready to promote people-to-people exchanges and pragmatic cooperation between China and all states within the consular districts.
