On January 31, Ambassador Huang Ping, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in New York, visited the University of Pennsylvania and met with President Amy Gutmann.

President Gutmann extended a warm welcome to Huang Ping. She said that the UPenn attached great importance to the development of long-term and practical cooperation with China. Over the years, UPenn has carried out hundreds of cooperative projects and exchange activities with Tsinghua, Shanghai Jiao Tong and many other Chinese universities, and the only UPenn overseas center--Penn Wharton China Center and the Penn China Research and Engagement Fund were established recently. President Gutmann emphasized that young people are the future of China-U.S. relations. Today more Chinese graduates choose to return to China for further development, while many young Americans go to China for study and jobs because they know and love more about China. Therefore, strengthening educational cooperation is the most effective way to enhance exchanges and mutual trust among the young generation and the long-term development of China-U.S.relations.

Huang Ping highly appreciated Gutmann's efforts to promote UPenn's cooperation with China. He said that UPenn enjoys a global reputation and its high-quality teaching and research attract outstanding students from all around the world, including over 3,000 Chinese. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the United States 40 years ago, educational cooperation and people-to-people exchanges have been of great significance in communicating the peoples and enhancing the friendship between two countries. Today, as the two largest economies in the world, further strengthen dialogue and cooperation, benefit the two peoples, share international responsibilities and jointly build a Community of Shared Future for Mankind are important goals for both countries in the long run. He hoped President Gutmann would continue to promote the cooperation with China to bring more positive energy into the development of bilateral relations.

Huang also introduced the strong measures taken by the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government to lead its people in fighting against the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. He said that China is fully confident and capable of overcoming the hardships. He hoped that UPenn would take measures to take good care of its Chinese students so that their studies and lives will not be affected. President Gutmann said the university would do its best to prevent and control the epidemic among Chinese students.
