The Chinese Consulate General in New York has received dozens of complaints today regarding telephone scams. Many reported that they received phone calls from people who claimed to be staff members of the Chinese Consulate General. The scammers made excuses to harvest personal and bank information. They also made bank transfer requests.
 
The phone calls have been confirmed as fraud after a preliminary investigation. The Consulate General has reported the cases to the New York City Police Department.
 
The Chinese Consulate General in New York warns Chinese nationals to stay alert and trust no phone request regarding credit card account or bank transfer in the name of the Consulate General. The Consulate General only charges administrative fees in designated offices that process certification and document approval. The Consulate General does not demand payment via phone call or Wechat. Please file a police report in the face of similar phone scams.
