On July 23, 2024, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met with Chairperson of the General Council of the Japanese Liberal Democratic Party Hiroshi Moriyama in Beijing.
Wang Yi expressed his appreciation for Hiroshi Moriyama's long-term care and support for the improvement and development of China-Japan relations. Wang Yi said that last November, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in San Francisco to reaffirm the commitment to comprehensively advancing the strategic relationship of mutual benefit between the two countries and building a constructive and stable China-Japan relationship that meets the requirements of the new era. This has charted the course for the two countries' efforts. As neighboring countries, China and Japan should support, understand and help each other, which is the right way for neighboring countries to coexist. The two sides have long reached the consensus that they are "each other's cooperative partner, not a threat", and China has never been a so-called "unprecedented strategic challenge". Wang Yi urged both sides to abide by the provisions of the four political documents between China and Japan, strengthen dialogue, enhance mutual understanding, and deepen cooperation. This not only serves the interests of the people of both countries, but also contributes to regional and even global peace and development.
Noting that the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee has just concluded, Wang Yi said that China will further deepen reform comprehensively, build a high-standard socialist market economy, and pursue high-standard opening up, which will provide more opportunities for Japan's development and China-Japan cooperation. As the world enters a period of change and chaos, China and Japan, as important countries in Asia and the world, should join hands to build a community with a shared future for mankind. Wang Yi expressed the hope that Chairperson Hiroshi Moriyama and people with vision from various sectors of Japan will play an active role in this regard. And Japanese politicians, including young parliamentarians, are welcome to visit China from time to time.
Wang Yi elaborated on China's position and concerns regarding the discharge of contaminated water from Fukushima to the sea and the Taiwan question, pointing out that the discharge of contaminated water into the sea concerns human health, the marine environment and international public interests. He said that the pressing task is to establish a long-term international monitoring mechanism to ensure the full and effective participation of China and other stakeholders. The Taiwan question bears on the political foundation of China-Japan relations, and the Taiwan Strait is not a "political stage". Former Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka once told Premier Zhou Enlai that "trust is the foundation of everything". Japan should abide by the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan, be cautious in words and actions on the Taiwan question, and ensure that the foundation of China-Japan relations will not be damaged or shaken.
Hiroshi Moriyama expressed condolences over the floods in Hunan and other places in China, and said that he has keenly felt China's rapid development and economic vitality during his second visit to China after six years. He expressed readiness to carry forward the friendly tradition of the elder generation of statesmen, continue to strengthen exchanges with China and promote mutually beneficial cooperation in accordance with the important common understandings reached between the leaders of the two countries, and push for the sustainable development of the strategic relationship of mutual benefit between the two countries.
