Tibet has not utilized its abundant natural resources such as hydro, solar and wind. Over a long period, farmers and herdsmen have depended on cow dung, firewood, turf and tree roots as fuels. During the 10th Five-Year Plan period(2001-2015), the Tibet Resource Research and Demonstration Center drawing on the advanced energy-conservation technology from inland provinces, had developed solar energy plus methane power development technology.

In 2006, the state government donated more than 19 million yuan(approximately 3 million US dollars)to the construction of methane power projects in Lhasa, Nyingchi, Chamdo, Lhoka and other prefectures. By 2012, Hygenic and user-friendly methane power had been delivered to and acknowledged by more than one million farmers and herdsmen.

"In the past, the usage of cow dung which was scattered all over the courtyard was not hygienic as the walls were blackened by smoke. By using methane for cooking, this problem has been completely solved." said Tsering Ngodup.

Nowadays methane has been popularized in farmers and herdsmen-inhabited areas as it has brought both economic and environment benefits. And tt has served as an important substitute for traditional fuel-firewood. According to calculation, an eight-to-ten construction of methane projects has not only improved living environment, but also increased incomes of local residents. It is reported that a methane tank with a 320-350-square-meter annual generation capacity could save 800 yuan per year in fuel consumption. In addition, the residue, when put in the soil, could help ease the fertilizer shortage. If used in a greenhouse, it can bring in more than 1,000 yuan of income. A ten-square-meter methane tank is capable of generating methane power of 385 square meters and solving 80 percent of fuel needs of a family of five.

The Dakyung's, who live in a small village in Lhasa's Chengguan District, has substantially benefited from the use of methane over the past two years. In days without methane, their annual fuels - cow dung would be as much as to be loaded by two trucks. But now they have a methane tank in the yard,and they know how to operate and manage it, instructed by the technical staff . This methane tank could meet the lifelong need of the family of three.

Dakyung said that methane energy is clean and convenient,and by using it they can save 2,000 yuan per year. Vegetables grown in greenhouses using solar and methane energy could be put to market if there are leftovers. It generates 4000 yuan per year. And the fire ignited by methane is so strong that it makes cooking easier and more efficient.
