This is a photo (Xinhua News Agency) of a plaque collected from local villagers in Myanmar, providing details about the C-53 that has lain atop Gaoligong Mountain for over half a century, including its manufacturer, model, and production date.
The plane crashed in 1943 and is the most intact “Hump” wreckage discovered to date. The Hump airlift route established during World War II between Yunnan, China, and India was one of the most treacherous strategic transport lines in military history. Over three years, it airlifted 800,000 tons of war supplies, but at a heavy cost: 561 aircraft crashed, 107 went missing, and over 1,500 crew members lost their lives.
