On October 22, 2015, the “Ceremony to Honor the Return of WWII U.S. Airman Remains” was held at the Jianchuan Museum in Sichuan. A delegation from the U.S. brought back the remains of American airmen who had been resting for 72 years in the Ruoguo Glacier in the Yigong Town of Bome County in Nyingchi, Xizang Autonomous Region. (Photo: Xinhua News Agency)

“The Hump Route”, established during World War II, served as an “air lifeline” for the Allies to deliver strategic supplies to China. This route facilitated the transport of Chinese troops to India for overseas operations against Japan while returning vital war materials such as gasoline and equipment from India back to China.

The route stretches approximately 800 kilometers (500 miles), with elevations ranging from 4,500 to 5,500 meters, and peaks reaching up to 7,000 meters. The mountains rise and fall like the humps of a camel, which is why it is called “the Hump Route”.
