The State of New Jersey and Zhejiang Province established sister province/state relations in 1981. Newark and Xuzhou City of Jiangsu (1993), Jersey City and Changsha City of Hunan (1995) and Nantong City of Jiangsu (1996), Union County and Wenzhou City of Zhejiang (1998), Somerset County and Shaoxing city of Zhejiang (2003) are sister cities. In 2008, Shandong Province and New Jersey signed a comprehensive cooperation agreement.

In 2019, New Jersey’s total trade in goods with China was US$18.65 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 8.1%, exports to China were US$1.83 billion, a year-on-year increase of 16.7%, and imports from China were US$16.82 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 10.2%. China is the fourth largest in New Jersey. Export market and the largest source of imports.
